English very important ah?? I don't think so. WAIT. Just read on.

English is considered an international language. Yes! We would normally strike a conversation with english unless they looked jakun or u heard them speaking in their own tongues(language). We have been taught that english is important for everything in life. For example, job application. If you're well verse in english, others may look highly on you and you may stand a higher chance of getting employed. I'm amazed how some ppl can write so well. So well that often i would have to read 3 to 4 times to get the message.

Not many ppl can speak english especially at the school where i am currently doing my degree. Even at work. At first, i would use english when i'm in contact with strangers in person or on the phone. However, most of them cannot understand. Then, i have to match other languages with the ppl im meeting or calling before hand.

Lets say i wanna call someone up to check on prices of light bulbs. I would go
Hello? ---[NAME]---ah? Irena ah...Terra Kitchen(if they dun remember me/first time calling)
see? all not english ma. Just names. Then they start talking in whatever language then only i'll converse with them. Most of the time i would speak cantonese, mandarine or bahasa to them. Seldom i would use english, made me alien. hah!

So, should we spend too much time on learning a foreign language? (debate question on world speaker championship, China) I'm not denying that english is essential or it should be abolish from our syllabus. I think having a good command in english is sufficient. Parents used to pressured their children to master english causing them to abandon other mother tongues. That's why most of the teenagers or young adults are stripped off from one of their original traits.

so i think most importantly, it is good enough when u understand what the text book and internet is all about and other ppl can understand u, does not really matter what language u speak. In fact, does not matter how well ur english is, as long as u make sense. Yea?

Now ah, since China is coming up like a hibernating dragon, everyone is trying to take up mandarine!! Thinking that one day they would be sent to china to discuss a multimillion project. What a joke.

Aren't we lucky? if u cannot speak english and mandarine, u still have bahasa mer.
